Talley Vineyards “Oliver’s” Chardonnay (Arroyo Grande Valley)

Talley Vineyards is a family owned and operated winery that specializes in estate grown chardonnay and pinot noir ideally suited for the climate and soils of the Arroyo Grande and Edna Valleys. The Talley’s farming history in the area dates to 1948 when Oliver Talley began growing vegetables in the Arroyo Grande Valley. Guided by this legacy and a commitment to long term sustainability, Talley Vineyards focuses on attention to detail in all aspects of farming and winemaking operations. The goal is to produce distinctive wines of consistently high quality that best express the unique character of each of the Talley family’s six vineyard sites the Arroyo Grande Valley and Edna Valley AVAs.

The yield was 1.24 tons per acre, slightly below average in Oliver’s Vineyard, resulting in grapes with concentrated, intense flavors. The wine was 100% barrel-fermented, and then aged in 30% new French oak for 18 months and bottles unfiltered.

The 2007 Oliver’s Vineyard Chardonnay exhibits aromas pineapple, exotic tropical fruits and smoked almonds. On the palate this wine is rich, though balanced by refreshing acidity; flavors of pineapple and ripe mandarin orange lead into an extended finish.

2006 Bassetti Family Vineyards “Madolyn” Syrah (Central Coast)

Bassetti Vineyards is located 3 miles from the Pacific Ocean along Hwy 46, just south of the town of Cambria. Susan and Ellis Bassetti own a parcel of property in a small coastal valley running parallel to the ocean that has been in the family for over 100 years. In 1998, with help of John Alban, the rocky soil was terraced and seven acres of Syrah were planted. The steep and rocky soil allow for very good drainage, which is ideal for growing Syrah. Since 2000, two different clones of Syrah were planted on eight more acres of the property. These soils are deep, dark and rich require a lot of careful maintenance of the vines to curb vigor and limit foliage. The 2006 vintage was crafted by Brian Denner at Denner Vineyards in Paso Robles. The wine is refined and sophisticated with classic cool climate characteristics – perfect addition to any cellar! Only 200 cases of this gem produced!

2008 Bedrock Wine Co. “Lorenzo’s Heirloom” (Dry Creek Valley)

The 2008 Lorenzo’s Heirloom Wine comes from a hundred-plus year old vineyard located in a privileged position on the Dry Creek Bench. The varietal percentage in the Lorenzo’s Heirloom Wine has stayed the same (approximately 50% Zinfandel, 25% Carignane, and 25% Petite Sirah, with trace amounts of Alicante Bouschet, Valdigue, and Cinsault). As with 2007, all the varietals were co-fermented using native yeasts. After fermentation to dryness the wines were barreled down to 40% new French Oak barrels for eleven

months, and racked only once prior to bottling. The final wine is textbook Dry Creek—full of brooding black fruits, irony mineral elements, and broad, sweeping but soft, tannins. Perhaps a bit more elegant than the somewhat outsized 2007 - this is a more complete wine and will reward patience.
